Happy Women’s History Month! At Global Payments Integrated, we are excited to use this time to remember and celebrate women’s accomplishments in payments and fintech.
What is Women’s History Month?
Women’s History Month started as a weeklong celebration in Sonoma, California. The school district in Sonoma organized it, and students would give presentations about influential women in US history. The idea eventually spread to nearby communities and far enough to where out-of-state districts and organizations across the United States began taking part.
Jimmy Carter issued a presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week in 1980, and the following year Congress passed a resolution that established it as a national celebration. Years later, a successful petition to Congress expanded the event to the entirety of March.
Today, Women’s History Month is an opportunity for everyone to celebrate and raise awareness of women’s often-overlooked contributions to history, culture, and society.
Celebrating Our Women In Payments
Global Payments, our parent organization, has several women involved in outside organizations who serve as role models for the next generation of women in payments.
Women’s Network in Electronic Transactions (Wnet) is a professional organization for women in payments. Four women from Global Payments were appointed to serve as Wnet representatives in 2021 - one as a Board Member and three others as President’s Advisory Council Members. These women hold various roles in marketing strategy, product, finance & accounting, and information security, making it exciting to see leadership reflected at every level!
Additionally, Global Payments’ Chief Information Security Officer Stacy Hughes was elected to be part of the PCI SSC Board of Advisors. This cross-industry group advises on the ongoing development of PCI Security Standards.
Resources for Women at Global Payments Integrated
Employees at Global Payments Integrated are openly invited to join the dedicated internal employee group that supports women. The Global Payments Women’s Network (GPWN) provides opportunities for networking, volunteering, and professional development year-round. There are special webinars held quarterly, and members can share posts and have discussions across the organization.
GPWN is accessible to all employees on our corporate intranet, and select offices worldwide have local chapters that can provide additional support.
